Avalanche Alert Issued in Five J&K Districts
Srinagar, Dec 24: Authorities on Wednesday issued an avalanche alert for five districts of Jammu and Kashmir following fresh snowfall in the upper reaches over the past few days, raising concerns about snow-related risks in vulnerable areas.
Officials said the alert, categorised as low danger, has been issued for the districts of Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Ramban. Avalanche activity is likely at elevations above 2,800 metres during the next 24 hours, particularly in high-altitude and snowbound zones.
The warning comes after large parts of the higher reaches across Jammu and Kashmir witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall, which has led to accumulation of fresh snow on unstable slopes. Such conditions often increase the possibility of avalanches, especially in known danger-prone areas.
As a precautionary measure, the administration has advised locals, trekkers, shepherds, and travellers to avoid movement in avalanche-prone zones and strictly follow advisories issued by district authorities and disaster management agencies.
Officials also urged people living in upper areas to remain alert and immediately report any unusual snow movement or related incidents to local authorities. Security forces and disaster response teams have been asked to stay prepared in case of emergencies.
Meanwhile, weather conditions in higher reaches continue to remain cold, with snow cover persisting in several mountainous areas, further increasing the need for caution over the coming days.
